Davao City—Dr. Anthony C. Sales, regional director of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), together with the officials of the Hydrology for Environment, Life, and Policy (Help) met with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (Unesco) representatives to conduct a post evaluation of the workshops on the Multi-Uses of River Basins and Consultation of the Sustainable Management of Talomo-Panigan-Tamugan Watershed. They also discuss possible directions of Help Network Davao to sustainably manage the watersheds.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Shabaz Khan of International Hydrological Programme of Unesco -France; Dr. Denim Zhou, professor of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Capital Normal University of China; Declan Hearne, Chief Natural Resource Management CRS-Philippines; and Dr. Rahman Elfitre, a Research Fellow of the Institute for Environment and Development in Malaysia.
Dr. Sales is optimistic that the meeting will be able to harmonize the use of water as hydropower and drinking water. “The goal is to come up with a strategy to link and harmonize initiatives on the use of Davao Watersheds,” Dr. Sales said.
Discussions during the meeting centered in the role of non-government organizations (NGOs), sectoral prospective in community engagement and HELP Network Davao to promote cooperation for integrated water resource management.
Also, Dr. Denim Zhou has offered his software on watershed protection for free to Davao City during his sharing of experience in a forum on the Multi-Uses of River Basins at Marco Polo Hotel held last November 30. (DOST XI)
